SOUTH AFRICA Currency
& Money:
Currency = The South African Rand.
South Africa has a sophisticated banking system and changing of foreign
currency, cashing of traveller's cheques etc. is a simple process at
both banks and exchange bureaus. South African citizens and
residents have to conform to foreign exchange regulations - chat to your
local bank. VISA and
MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted, with Diners and American
Express cards being accepted by some establishments. Vaccinations
& medical assistance for outbound travellers:
There are a number of Travel Clinics who can assist the outbound
traveller. One is situated in the domestic terminal of the
Johannesburg International Airport, while the NetCare Group has a chain
of travel clinics situated in medical facilities such as the Linksfield
Clinic. Travel
documentation:
We have been members of the AA (Automobile Association) for a number of
years. They have given us great advice and lots of
assistance. When the time comes for the Carnet, the International
Drivers Licences and personal travel insurance etc., we will be getting
it all through the AA. Visas
for outbound travellers:
If you have a fairly fixed itinerary, it may be possible to get many of
your visas before leaving. However, some visas are only valid for
three months from date of issue, so it you're planning a longer trip,
this may not be possible.
The AA can assist with visa requirements, or just call Information
Enquiries (1023) and they will be able to give you the telephone numbers
of the various embassies and consulates. Visas
for inbound travellers:
Some passport holders will require visas to enter South Africa.
Contact the closest South African Embassy or Consulate to enquire as to
the requirements for your nationality. Unlike many other African
countries, South Africa has a computerised Immigration system, so make
sure all your paperwork, visas requirements etc. are in order. Language:
South Africa has eleven official languages; English, Afrikaans and nine
native languages. English is the most widely-spoken in business
and tourism circles. Places
